Inspired by Steve Reich’s understanding of music as a gradual process, and set to Steve Reich’s “Piano Counterpoint,” Phrase Work, Three Variations uses repetition to scaffold movement. The piece engages chance operations to generate an unexpected order of things, and aims to explore the extent to which a set of basic steps can be unfolded, stretched, molded and remolded again.
